I love prams,  I bought a Marlborough last year and lovingly l restored it back to a new condition. It is in album 2 page 2 if you want to look at it.

When my children were born, (the first was 20 years ago) I was choosing a pram as you do and I had always fancied the idea of having a huge carriage pram as I’d had a childhood dream to have a big pram like a NorlandNanny pram and push it round Hyde Park.

I bought a Carlton inthe end as I thought it would be good to transport in the car if needed, however I only ever put it in the car once as it was much more fun to walk. I loved the fact I could see my babies and they could see me so we could ‘chat’ plus they were also away from the exhaust fumes. It was a pleasure and a thrill every time we went out.

Looking back I thought I could have gone for the big boat bottom one after all. So when my niece asked me to help her out and have her two little boys one day a week I jumped at the chance to look around for a bigger pram.

I don’t get to take my Marlborough out as much as I would likeas the oldest boy is two and a half and not very keen on walking and although I have used the toddler seat he is really too big for it, falls asleep on it and it makes the pram a bit heavy to push plus it is a bit frustrating not beingable to see the baby who is six months old. I guess I would have done better to have got an even older pram which they both could sit in, one with a foot well.If I had more room I could be tempted!

Alas maybe in a while when the older one is walking more we might get on better we shall see. I also need to get a ramp to get it out ofthe house as I have steep steps.

At least when the grand children come along I shall be ready, I do love to admire it in my dining room anyway.

I also have a Silvercross dolls twin pram and a big wooden old dolls pram that I restored for my girls when they were youngsters.

I live in Bristol and I very rarely see these prams about which is a shame, even all the buggies are not facing mum or dad, What has happened to all the bonding and interaction that should be going on.

I guess big prams  will never really come back into fashion as houses are being built with little or no hall ways and people are determined to use cars despite a constant green movement on top of which trying to take one in a shop is a big no no. Years ago, I mean back when I was a baby, prams were left outside which would be unthinkable now.

Mothers now are going back to work so the walk to school is out as they have a fraught time with having to drop children off at schools and nurseries and it is quicker in the car.

That is not a criticism of mothers, society has evolved like this. I bet if you asked most mums or dads really, let’s not be sexist, they would welcome a walk in the park with a big bouncy pram.

So as bikes are getting more popular let’s bring back the big pram for recreational purposes, they are better for backs as well as better for babies and it is the healthier option which after all, isn’t that what weare all striving for?

Hi Pat, Thank you for your comments, yes I did go to Wolverhampton and spent a long time looking at the prams. It absolutely hammered down with rain so a walk with one was probably out of the question. I shall hope to take mine next year which would be nice.
